Having a spending plan

If you plan on buying a big ticket item then plan on how you are going to save for it. There are a few ways you can go about it. You can set up a savings account that will have an automatic deposit from your checking account or paycheck every week for a set amount. That account should be used to save up for that item only and a separate savings account set aside for emergency money. You could also buy a certificate of deposit (a CD) for 6 months that pays X amount of interest. If the amount you put in and the interest added to it equals the amount you are trying to save then it is the easiest way to save. Another way to use a CD is to lock up a large amount of money in the CD and have the interest deposited into your savings account. You can then use the savings account amount without even touching the CD.

I like people that have a plan like this blogger that will be saving up for a swimming spa. She seems to have it together with a goal in mind. She has also brought up another point of doing without or less of something in order to save for something you really want. I would also go one step further and sell something that I was not using and put the money towards what I am saving up for.

Treating yourself

Saving money is much like going on a diet, if you don't reward yourself for a good job done then you will not continue to save money. This year we will be receiving a sizable tax refund. Much of it is earmarked for paying off some large bills. About 25% of it is destined for the savings account. We have also allocated 5% of the refund to be spent as "reward money".

Each family member will be given some money to waste as they see fit. My husband the golfer will be getting a new pair of golf shoes along with other golf items. Our daughter might be either saving hers or buying some electronic item. I am not the sexy lingerie type of woman but I will be getting some new clothes that are not for work and tickets to a local event for a night out.

We will be doing our part to boost the local economy by spending, will you be doing the same?

Stock market prices

Almost everyone that has or had a 401K had to invest in stocks and or bonds. The stock market has gone to the pre 1997 value but so what? If you didn't sell your stock you still have it. When the market rises again your stock will go back up. At least that is the assumption of most people that buy and sell stock. But what do you do if the company you had stock in is going belly up? What are the exit signs that you should look for when you hold stock in a company?

The best thing to do is to watch the major stock holders that are officers in the company. If the vice president or financial officer sells a large portion of stock or stock options then it is time to start watching to see if there will be an announcement in the next few days about the company.

I use to buy and sell stocks many years ago. I now just invest in mutual funds because they are less volatile than just straight stocks. If you must know, yes I still have my mutual fund stocks. I have not sold any in the last 2 years.

Last night's Obamas' speech

I was happy with most of what President Obama had to say last night in his speech. I was appalled at the congressmen and senators that showed their obvious resentment towards the people's choice in a leader on national TV. What it shows to the world is a divided USA government during a time of crisis. I really didn't like that Louisiana governor that almost said that everything was fine in his neck of the woods. He even glossed over the fact that New Orleans is still struggling with the devastation of hurricane Katrina years later.

I still have to keep in mind that many of those people were elected by special interest groups. If they came to Washington to get their little hands in some fast money for the people that fronted their elections then I think they are going to be in for a rude awakening. Maybe the time has come for some justice in politics. At least it is a beginning.

This time around we might not have to listen to immigration attorneys, representatives of big oil or real estate barons. Maybe this time, just once, we the people will be listened to.

Companies that rip us off

I am so sick of companies that rip off people and stay in business at the same time. There are so many companies that deserve to stay in business but because they are not ripping people off they are the ones that are going out of business.

Just yesterday I was in the supermarket buying food and noticed that the size of a can of tuna has gone from 6 oz. to 5 oz. The price even went up by 20 cents a can. The size of a bag of corn chips has shrunk but the price has remained the same. We are getting less food for the same price. Do those food companies think they will stay in business by misleading their customers? In today's economy many consumers are now very much shopping savvy when it comes to amounts and prices. I often shop with a calculator to see what the price is for something by the ounce or pound and compare it to another item for price.

Food companies are not the only ones that are pulling a fast one. Comcast is losing over 200,000 customers a month. They just announced a rate hike a few days ago!! Do they think that they will get more customers that way? I don't think so.

Cosmetics have been always high priced in my opinion, so if there was a price hike in lip gloss or foundation I would not notice it. I will say this about the cosmetic companies, they will see a huge fall in profits as people will start to consider cosmetics as an "extra" and not a necessity anymore.

Expanding your knowledge

In my previous post I wrote about going back to school to either further your career or change careers. If you cannot devote both time and money to going back to school full time then you can always take short certification courses that can get you ahead career wise. Expand on what you already know or if you have gone to a few job interviews and they keep asking you if you are certified with an application or procedure then get certified.

If you are aiming for a management position did you know that there are certification courses for project managers? Often people wrongly assume that managers simply manage people and tell them what to do and when to do it. Managers are also responsible for budgets, hiring and directing a project from design to completion. You must not confuse retail managers with the role of industry managers, they are totally different.

Just because you may have been a retail store manager does not mean you are qualified to be a manager in another industry. I have interviewed many people that tried to go from retail to electronics without a clue as to the job requirements of a project manager. They had 5 or more years experience as a retail manager and thought they were qualified.

If you want to become a project manager and you are interested in an online course then you might look into PMP exam preparation which is a course that would prepare you for becoming an industry project manager.

You don't have to go from interview to interview and get turned down for the job. Just see it as a learning experience and find out what they want. Once you know what the job market is looking for then you can get more knowledge on that subject.

Going back to school

I have changed careers more than once in my lifetime to keep pace with what industry was hiring at the time. I have gone from electronics to medical and back to electronics again. Of course each time I had to go back to school (college that is) to get educated again. That took tuition, textbooks and lots of time. At the same time I had to be bringing in an income to pay the bills. That is not an easy task if you are on your own. I was thankfully, married but that put more pressure on my husband to earn enough to cover the extra expenses of tuition.

Going back to school is not just a case of taking courses to find a better job, it is also finding what the job market demands will be once you complete your schooling. After school is done with you still have to find a job.

The Obama mortgage plan

I just finished watching President Obama making his speech in Arizona about the mortgage plan part of the stimulus package. The part of his speech that stood out more to me than any other part was when he said, "people have got to learn to live within their means".

He got a round of applause at that statement. I think that the current generation of income earners have lived way too long on lines of credit. Even the companies we work for rely too heavily on borrowing to make payroll. The fiasco with the Vegas vacations for those lending companies only came to light because of some great investigative journalism.

I think that teaching people not to waste money or live beyond their means comes from example. I was once the low person on the totem pole at work, just like many of you were or are. As the lowly worker I can tell you that there was many a time when upper management were having parties or get togethers at work right in front of the workers that were not invited to join them. If it was not for the workers those managers are nothing. Of course that taught us to party on when we were able to and not to save for that rainy day. If those managers had not partied maybe the companies would have money to invest into their futures instead of laying off people.

Teaching people not to live beyond their means has to come down from the top of government through the companies to the workers and then to the children of the workers.

As a flip side note: if eveyone lived within their means then we would not need to borrow. The banking system is based on lending money so who would they lend to?

Further industries that will continue to suffer

People are cutting back on everything to just keep their heads above water when it comes to monthly expenses. There are 2 industries that are suffering rather badly right now because they are deemed to be a luxury and not a mainstay for life now. One of them is cable/satellite TV and satellite radio industry.

I am hearing that Sirius radio is taking bankruptcy, can other entertainment services be far behind them? How many people do you know that have either cut back to basics for cable TV services or simply went back to the antenna for their reception?

Another industry that I can see having problems is the home security industry. With more and more people getting laid off, they no longer need a wireless security system to keep an eye on their home while they are at work.

The extras in our lives that we had become accustomed to are now being cut away to the bone. We have to in order to survive the growing recession or should I say depression.

Making money with your blog, watch your Alexa rating

I hear so many people complaining about how they don't have any Page Rank on their blogs and now they are having a hard time making any money with them. Page Rank seems to be what most of the bigger paid to blog companies are concerned about but I have found out something very different.

My new found knowledge came about when I started to get emails from (if you want people or companies to contact you regarding advertising you have to let them contact you) one of my blogs with no page rank. The emails were from big name corporations that wanted me to place a pre-written article on my blog about one of their products. I thought it was puzzling until I emailed back one of the companies and asked them what made my blog so interesting to them. They mentioned several factors in this order:
  • The blog was appealing to the eye
  • The posts on the blog were well written
  • The Alexa rating was below 400,000 and dropping
It was the last item that I checked further into and sure enough the Alexa rating number was getting smaller. Alexa is the industry standard for how many visitors your blog gets compared to other websites and blogs.

I made almost $100 on two posts for that one little blog last week. Not bad for a blog with no PR but a low Alexa number.

Revamping an old website

I have an old website that I am thinking about turning into a blog format. Currently the website doesn't get much traffic, only a few visitors a day. I was just checking on a few of the pages and clicked on a few of the links and found the links to be so old that they no longer go anywhere. The websites that they use to link to are long gone.

I really like the Wordpress themes that make your blog look like a magazine. The 4 column ones are the ones that I am thinking about using for the old website. Since all I have to do is upload the Wordpress.org software and themes to my hosting company I should have the whole website redone in about 5 hours or less.

Now there is a whole new type of Wordpress theme that lets you have a different look to each of your pages and even have different items in your sidebars than on your main page. It is called a premium wordpress theme. Of course the premium type is not free like most Wordpress themes but if you like the flexibility of having a blog look like a magazine or have each one of your pages have different sidebars then purchasing a premium Wordpress theme will be the way to go.

Now to the fun part of Wordpress themes, you can make money from becoming an affiliate of the site that I mentioned above. You can sign up and make 50% of each theme that you sell through your affiliate link. I think I might join up since I haven't done so yet. I could always use the extra cash.

The idiots guide to making a nickle a day with your blog

You might remember that about a month ago I joined a newer blogging community at Today.com, well here are my results so far:
  • I have 17 posts and 21 total comments on them
  • I started out earning 2 cents a day and now I am up to 5 cents a day
  • I have not publicized the blog at all
  • Most of the traffic has come from Google or other bloggers at Today
I have never earned money so easily as at that community blogging site. Even if I put up one new blog post once every 3 days I still get about 5 cents a day. Now I have noticed that the more posts I put up on there that are relevant to news items that day I get 15+ visitors to that blog post. The people at Today make sure that your blog posts are found by the Google search engines immediately.

What I like about it is the fact that I don't have to do any SEO work with the blog at all, it is all handled for me already. I suppose that if I did some linking to the blog I would get more visitors but then I would not be able to tell you that it was easy just to write in the blog and then forget it.

I wonder how long it will take before I am earning 25 cents a day? If I go slow it might take another month. Now 5 cents or even 25 cents a day is not much but if you are getting less than that on your own blogs with Google Adsense then this type of blogging community might be a welcome relief for you.

The reality of earning money online

If you need to pay a bill or need extra cash within the next 2 weeks then forget about earning money via blogging to get it. The reality of blogging for money is the fact that after you have "earned" your money, you will need to wait for up to 2 months to get paid.

  • Google takes 1 and a half months to pay you once you reach the minimum payout of $100.00
  • Amazon affiliates have to wait about 2 months to get paid their commission.
  • Click Bank requires a minimum of 5 transactions before your first payment.
  • Pay Per Post, Social Spark and Blogsvertise have a 30 day waiting period before you are paid.
  • Blog to Profit, PayU2blog, Smorty and Sponsored Reviews take about 2 weeks to pay you.
None of those pay periods take into account any delays in payment due to any one of those companies having money problems. As a contractor for those companies you want to make sure that their financial situation is sound. If you went to work for a company and they couldn't pay you, you would have the backing of your state government to get your pay. As a blogger (contractor) you would have little recourse should the company that you blog for goes under.

Your best bet for earning money on your blog is to run advertisements that are paid for up front. Start thinking more along the lines of your blog being an online magazine or newspaper and run it as such.

Outrageous comments

The one thing I have to put up with as a blog writer is the outrageous comments I get at times. Thankfully I set all my comments to be moderated. Just today I got a very long winded comment at my dog blog about "how I just happened to stumble across your blog and find it wonderful , blah, blah, blah....". That part was fine. It was the part that the commenter went on to describe their weight loss adventure and would love to exchange links to their weight loss blog, complete with several links. Hello!, did you happen to notice that you commented on a blog about dogs? That comment got deleted.

People, will you please have some respect for the blogs you comment on? If you want people to come and visit your blog then show some intelligence. Also if you write a comment like a 5th grader you had better be a 5th grader. No one will bother to check out who wrote the comment if you write like a child unless they are a pervert of some kind.

Commenting on another person's blog can work for you or against you. Be wise and intelligent and make it work for you.

Selling online

Have you set up a website to sell your items from yet? If you are just starting out there are a few places that I recommend. Two of them are etsy.com and ecrater.com. Etsy charges a fee and eCrater is free. They have the advantage that both companies submit your website pages and item descriptions to the search engines. Google search picks up on your items within 48 hours on eCrater.

Auctiva has just started their own ecommerce site and they might be a contender in the ecommerce field.

Those ones are where your store is part of their system and they offer their members group searching and forums where you can learn from each other. They also have restrictions on how your store looks and how you accept payments or do your shipping.

They are more or less web stores that are set up for beginners. If you have website experience and feel comfortable running your own website and paying for your own webhosting then just make sure you find a web hosting company that has reliable servers. You don't want to have a website on a server that keeps going down all the time. One such web hosting company to take a look at is called Web Hosting Geeks. They have lots of informative articles on their blog for you to educate yourself before diving into running your own website store.

Is your blog fat?

Is your blog or website lean or fat?

Think of lean as being full of information, photos or videos that your visitors will enjoy and keep coming back for more. Think of fat as being your advertisements. Just as in the human body you need both lean and fat for your website or blog to function properly. Your “fat” part of your blog supplies you with your income, the “lean” with what your readers want.

Too much fat in your blog will chase your readers away in droves. I am sure that you have done searches online for something and have come across at least a few websites or blogs that were nothing more than ad farms with very little, if any, true information that you were looking for. I bet you avoided that website in any future searches.

You will need to take an honest look at your own website or blog for excess fat. The best weight loss pills in the world are not going to help you with removing your blog fat, you’ll have to do that yourself. A good rule of thumb is to have no more than 20% of your web or blog page contain ads. Even Google restricts how many times an ad block will show up in a page.

I bet if you reduce the fat content of your blog or website you will get more readers and those readers will become return visitors. It is those return visitors that will click and buy items form your ads.

Using phases to get high paying Google ads

How many of you use phases in your blog posts to generate high paying Google ads? I bet not many of you. For example if I wanted to generate lots of camping equipment ads on this post I would add phrases like "Swiss Army watches" or "tents" or "sleeping bags". In my experience it takes having a phrase or series of similar phases mentioned at least 3 times before Google will latch on to those words and generate appropriate ads for the article. If you simply mentioned "I went camping" in your post and left it at that you might or might not get any ads related to camping at all. Most of the time you would get totally unrelated Google ads like "how to blog" or "make money" ads which don't pay that much in clicks.

Niche blogging, fact and fantasy

As you already know I started a blog about 6 months ago about dogs and puppies to show you how you could start a blog and make money from it. The blog is called "The Playful Pup" and you can see it by clicking here. The Playful Pup was put together as a general blog, not a niche blog. The traffic to the blog is not bad since I don't link to it much by commenting on other dog blogs. I get about 50 or less visitors a day to it and earn about $8 a month in Google clicks. I only put a blog post on there every 4 or 5 days just to keep it fresh in the eyes of the search engine bots.

What makes that blog different than a niche blog? A niche blog is a smaller subject matter of a larger subject. If the dog blog had been about dog grooming then it would be closer to being a niche blog. If it was about grooming poodles then it would be a niche blog.

Niche blogs that make money are set up and run differently than regular blogs. A niche blog usually has 5-15 in depth articles about the subject matter. The blog is set up more like a website with the fact that once the articles are put on the blog no more entries are made to the blog at all. Most niche blogs do not allow comments because if the niche blog owner had 30+ niche blogs, it would take forever to read and approve the comments or even keep track of them.

I am trying my hand at a few niche blogs that are devoted to gardening. My first one is called "Growing Tomatoes" and I started it only a day ago. You can see how far I have gotten with it and how it is set up to make money by clicking here. Within hours of setting it up I was getting visitors from the Google search. I have 6 more visitors today and the blog only has 3 articles on there so far. I plan on putting at least 10 articles on there.

So why did I pick gardening? There are 4 reasons for that. One, I like gardening. Two, I can write lots of interesting stuff about gardening. Three, spring is coming and so is the interest in growing your own vegetables. Four, I checked the popular searches with Google and found a huge niche market for vegetable gardening at this time.

Now I have no idea if the Google Adsense that is on the niche blog is good paying per click. That I will find out when someone clicks on them. Can you make money with niche blogs? Yes you can if your blog articles are well written, have good grammar and are interesting to read. The key to making money with niche blogs is to have lots of them. If you had 20 of them set up with at least 10 visitors a day on each one then you could expect at least .25 a day in clicks total. Now just imagine if you had more visitors a day. If your blog was the only one to cover that niche then you could have 1000's of visitors a day. It just takes imagination and great writing talent.

Finding beading supplies for your start-up business

I have a friend that has a teenage daughter that makes cell phone charms. She takes her daughter to the nearest hobby supply store to get her beads and findings. That store is over an hour away and the trip takes about 4 hours since they like to spend at least an hour there to make sure they have everything her daughter needs for the items she makes.

I found a website that I can't wait to tell her about, it has the beading supplies she has been looking for. The site is called Foxyfindings.com and they sell real turquoise and opals at liquidation prices. They also have glass beads but I was surprised at the other items they sell at under wholesale prices.

If you have a small custom made jewelry business then you to should check them out.
