Don't get something you can't maintain

Remember when you were a kid and wanted a puppy but your parents said you were too young to take care of it? That same reason should apply to adults who purchase something they can't maintain either from lack of funds or just plain ignorance. Take for example a house, everyone wants to own their own home and new buyers are often convinced by sellers and lenders that the monthly mortgage payment will be their only expense. Those new first time buyers fail to realize that home owners insurance will not cover everything. It often doesn't cover a roof leak or plumbing gone bad from deterioration over time. Some policies don't cover termites, insect damage, wood rot or worn carpet. You will be responsible for those items.

If you have some handy skills you can do much of the work yourself. Even something as simple as learning how to maintain a granite counter top or copper sinks without ruining them will help you out. Always set aside a monthly allowance for your home even if you don't use the money right away you will use it eventually.
