Expanding your knowledge

In my previous post I wrote about going back to school to either further your career or change careers. If you cannot devote both time and money to going back to school full time then you can always take short certification courses that can get you ahead career wise. Expand on what you already know or if you have gone to a few job interviews and they keep asking you if you are certified with an application or procedure then get certified.

If you are aiming for a management position did you know that there are certification courses for project managers? Often people wrongly assume that managers simply manage people and tell them what to do and when to do it. Managers are also responsible for budgets, hiring and directing a project from design to completion. You must not confuse retail managers with the role of industry managers, they are totally different.

Just because you may have been a retail store manager does not mean you are qualified to be a manager in another industry. I have interviewed many people that tried to go from retail to electronics without a clue as to the job requirements of a project manager. They had 5 or more years experience as a retail manager and thought they were qualified.

If you want to become a project manager and you are interested in an online course then you might look into PMP exam preparation which is a course that would prepare you for becoming an industry project manager.

You don't have to go from interview to interview and get turned down for the job. Just see it as a learning experience and find out what they want. Once you know what the job market is looking for then you can get more knowledge on that subject.
