Almost everyone I know dreams of finding the next "pet rock" craze and become an overnight millionaire. If you are too young to know what the pet rock was, I will tell you. This man , sorry I forgot his name, came out with a great gag gift, it was the pet rock. It was just a plain smooth semi-round rock packaged in a small cardboard box that was similar to the cat travel boxes at the time (1970's). It came with a booklet on how to care for your "pet". Lots of neat one line jokes and the dumb thing caught on. People just had to have one. I think they sold for around $1.99 to $2.99 at the time. It made the guy a millionaire overnight.
Of course the next successful gag or semi gag gifts were sea monkeys and chia pets. Notice how each one of the successful products is a "pet" of some sort?
Could the gel based AntWorks be the next "pet" gift? Done similar to a regular ant farm minus the dirt. This one has a gel that the ants make tunnels in. The pet idea is so popular because of city life. The great majority of the world's population live in large cities. Living space is at a premium and most places will not allow pets. Japan has gone so far as to create robot pets for it's population.
The same place that is selling the AntWorks farm has a wealth of unusual products. Anyone of those items could be the next "pet rock".
