Credit cards - the good and bad

While I am always stressing the importance of weening ourselves from credit cards they can serve a useful purpose. I keep one credit card for the sole purpose of shopping online. The total max balance for the card is set at $300 and I prefer it that way. It keeps crooks from using it to charge outrageous amounts. Most of my online purchases are much lower than $100 and the card also limits me from spending too much on a online shopping whim.

The bad thing about credit cards is that if you don't shop around for them you can get burned on some outrageous fees. Stay away from those credit cards that charge a monthly fee. I had one of those and dumped it very quickly. They boast how the interest rate is only 9% or less but they get you with a $6.00 a month fee just for the privilege of having the card. If you don't carry a balance how is the $6.00 fee going to help you? It doesn't so dump the card before you pay close to $72 a year in fees.
